I was just listening to a programme on Radio 4 about this, and it reminded me of the thread on our site. Seems a shame for this to go half-finished. It seems Carter is till lost in lurve with some guy, so I'll take over for now... though I'd welcome volunteers to carry on.

I might! I am in the process in writing my own "Rubaiyat of Amer Qaiyum", but I doubt it'll be as good, powerful, and meaningful!

What, without asking, hither hurried whence?
And, without asking, whither hurried hence!
Another and another Cup to drown
The Memory of this Impertinence!

It's worth it for the pun alone! Post it on the creative boards when you have anything we can look at. Actually, I'd be very interested to know your thoughts on Khayyam's poem, considering your posts on the 'Down with Alcohol' thread.

I think Omar Khayyam was in favour of alcohol?

He was certainly not a devout muslim, and had disdain for the popular religion of his home. At any rate, not all muslims are good muslims.

I must read the poem properly first, though.

There are so many things I could comment on here... <<bites hand>>

However, you're right, give it a read before you jump to conclusions. The poem's quite multi-layered. I've no doubt you'll get alot out of it, and it'll make you rethink your views on many things, not just booze. I know it did with me.

Come on, have I always got to tease out your views? Bring it on mother trucker! Comment all you like! Perhaps in the mob, or over private e-mail? I've made my argument against the encouragement of alcohol.

Heh. Yeah, we can discuss, but elsewhere. We need to keep this thread for the discussion of the Rubaiyat. Anyone have any thoughts on it, especially those reading for the first time?

Up from Earth's Centre through the Seventh Gate
I rose, and on the Throne of Saturn sate,
  And many Knots unravel'd by the Road;
But not the Knot of Human Death and Fate.

Clever.  If this is translated from another language, how does such wordplay work out like this, not to mention the rhyming?

There was the Door to which I found no Key:
There was the Veil through which I could not see:
Some little Talk awhile of Me and Thee
There seemed--and then no more of Thee and Me.

i'm pretty sure it's just a clever translator, will, unless this guy was some sort of multilingual punning visionary (wouldn't doubt this either).  translation is a very mysterious process , isnt it?

from what i understand the translator, Fitzgerald, gave himself lots of latitude when translating. Some think he should be regarded as a poet in his own right as the originals are quite different

Then to the rolling Heav'n itself I cried,
Asking, "What Lamp had Destiny to guide
Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?"
And--"A blind understanding!" Heav'n replied.

A blind understanding...seems kind of oxymoronic to me.

It'd fuck up the metre if the verse was:

And--"Faith..." Heav'n replied.

I've changed my mind actually. I like mine more. Ever the egotist.

maybe it describes the way most of us see the universe? We understand some of what we perceive, but our senses are so limited when it comes to comprehending reality. through a glass darkly, etc

Then to this earthen Bowl did I adjourn
My Lip the secret Well of Life to learn:
And Lip to Lip it murmur'd -- "While you live,
Drink! -- for once dead you never shall return."

So I guess Omar doesn't believe in reincarnation.  What is this Bowl of which he speaks?
