Would guess that most of us here have fantasies of giving up the rat race for a life of artistic intensity, but we also all probably talk a good fight rather than actually doing anything.
So, I have to ask - what are we here doing to get ourselves on the road to being artists or writers? What are we sacrificing? Maybe we could help each other by giving examples of what we're each prepared to do, and thus show that it's possible to reject the bullshit.
I'll start: I've recently given up a bar job so I can attend a writers' group. That doesn't sound much, but I needed that job as my student loans don't go anywhere near what I need to do basic things like eat. I know I'll probably get another job, but in the short term giving it up will put me in the shit. But at least I get to go meet other writers!
What sacrifices have you all made for your writing or whatever art it is you do?

But at least you still have an ability not to take yourself too seriously, which is probably very useful for an aspiring poet. I'm ashamed to say I haven't really sacrificed anything, and maybe that's my problem. I read my poetry back to myself and it seems anodyne. Maybe I need to think about taking a real risk so I can write, something like having a new experience that will jolt me out of my rut. Interesting thread, this. Am really waiting to see how others feel on this, as I'm sure what you all say will help me in my struggle. Carter.

in all honestly, sometimes i feel as if i haven't sacrificed enough. i fear that i sacrifice my art for the sake of conformity at times, and that my friends, is a shameful admition.

to be truthful i havn't sacrificed anything, it just comes naturally, being part of the hip-hop culture you jus go with the flow, if you good you good and if you bad you bad. Standard, One time.

I sacrificed some emotionally tortured days of unrequited love...other than that its been mostly brain cells. I have also sacrificed the safety of the roadways. Sometimes I'll get an idea and write it down while driving. Seems like all my best, artistic ideas come while I'm driving.

I haven't sacraficed anything. I have done art since I can remember, so doing it at uni seemed only natural. I suppose this is the lazy way, the selfish way. I did this because I love art classes, the atmosphere, the people, the discussions, criticism and organised work. It wasn't so much to learn as to enjoy myself.
The problem I have is that I'm incredibly lazy and give up on my good ideas if they can't be created as fast as my head wants them to be. Thus I have many pictures and stories half finished, all at one time my great idea that I'd use to go somewhere. Currently writing a book now. Let's see how long that lasts...
Keyserose, if you've given up a job like that to advance yourself, then atleast you can be happy in the knowledge that you deserve your big break if it ever comes your way, whereas the lazy doddley people like me don't =p

I sacrifice time. And memory.
Memories always lose something when being translated into writing.

I have sacrificed more for art than I have sacrificed art for anything else. But is it truly sacrificial when the act is compensated... when Art of its own virtue brings such glory - can it truly be called "sacrifice" or ought it to be better called, "a rewarding preference"? For me, to abandon Art would be more consistently defined as a sacrifice than abandoning anything else for Art. Though, perhaps like an alchemist: I have only sacrificed what I don't like in exchange for what I do - transmutation of the Bad into the Good. I have indeed abandoned main-stream culture, most social institutions of my locality (school, dating, god...s, authority, etc.), those too prejudice for the discriminate tolerances of good taste, and many upon many unfruitful idea(l)s for the sake of Art and my skills in the Arts.
Though sacrificing most opportunities for employment for my artistic identity, and many opportunities for sex and love (though perhaps opening up better opportunities): that is considerably sacrificial and perhaps even masochistic.

memories are echoes of past events... an echo always loses some of the original...
i have sacrificed sanity, love, life, time, will, desire, blood, soul. i can only hope that someone will read my work or see a photo and be brought to tears feeling what i felt at the time. it's all about conveying the message... and spreading it like disease.
